How to make Sticky Rice

Updated: Dec 13, 2021

Sticky rice is called Khao Niaow in Thai. The Thai way to make sticky rice is using a bamboo steamer. But there are different ways to make sticky rice without a bamboo steamer - see below. The best way to eat sticky rice is with your hands...but just like it's name, when you eat it, it will stick on your hands! There is a way to make it less sticky though - roll it quickly! My mom always said that, when you rolled sticky rice with your hand, and it still stick, then "you're not Thai".

METHOD 1

How to make sticky rice with bamboo steamer.

Note: You can find sticky rice steamer at some Asian grocery store but I got my from Amazon

INGREDIENTS

2 cup Glutinous Rice

Water to Soak the Rice

DIRECTIONS

Wash rice several times with water, till water turn clear.

In a bowl, cover rice with water and soak overnight or at least 3 hours.

Drain rice well with bamboo steamer. Add water half way to the steamer pot, then set the bamboo steamer on top and cover.

Steam rice over medium high heat about 15-20 minutes. Until rice starts to stick together.

Turn the rice over, so the bottom is on top. Cover and stream for 10 more minutes or until the rice is fully cooked.

This makes about 3 cups of cooked sticky rice.

METHOD 2

How to cook sticky rice in microwave

INGREDIENTS

2 cup Glutinous Rice

1 1/3 cup Water

Water for Soak the Rice

DIRECTIONS

Wash rice several times with water, till water turn clear.

In a bowl, cover rice with water and soak overnight or at least 3 hours.

Drain rice well, place rice in a microwave proof bowl. Add 1 1/3 cup water.

Cook in microwave for 10 minutes. (Do not cover)

When the rice is cooked turn the rice over, so the bottom is on top and leave it in microwave for 5 minutes (to cool, with microwave off).
